Copper-tungsten electrodes are composite materials primarily composed of tungsten and copper. They combine the high melting point and high hardness of tungsten with the excellent electrical and thermal conductivity of copper, and are widely used in fields such as resistance welding, electrical discharge machining (EDM), high-voltage electrical appliances, and electrochemical machining. The following is a detailed introduction to the classification of copper-tungsten electrodes and a selection guide for different application scenarios.
I. Classification of Copper-Tungsten Electrodes
1. Classification by Composition Ratio
- WCu70 (70% tungsten, 30% copper): It has an electrical conductivity of approximately 48 – 52% IACS, a thermal conductivity of about 210 – 230 W/m·K, and a hardness of around 180 – 200 HB. It is suitable for applications with high requirements for electrical and thermal conductivity, such as resistance welding.
- WCu75 (75% tungsten, 25% copper): Its electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, and hardness are between those of WCu70 and WCu80. It is applicable to medium-load scenarios, such as resistance welding and electrical contacts.
- WCu80 (80% tungsten, 20% copper): It has an electrical conductivity of about 40 – 45% IACS, a thermal conductivity of approximately 190 – 200 W/m·K, and a hardness of around 220 – 240 HB. It has stronger ablation resistance and is suitable for high-corrosion-resistant environments such as precision EDM and high-voltage discharge tubes.
- WCu85 (85% tungsten, 15% copper): With a higher tungsten content, it has stronger resistance to arc ablation and higher hardness, but its electrical and thermal conductivity decrease accordingly. It is suitable for applications requiring high corrosion resistance and stability, such as electrochemical machining.
2. Classification by Application Field

- EDM Electrodes: Used in precision mold manufacturing and the forming of difficult-to-machine materials, they require electrodes with low wear, high precision, and good heat dissipation performance.
- High-Voltage Electrical Appliance Contacts and Switches: Used in high-voltage vacuum switches, SF6 circuit breakers, etc., they require contact materials with excellent arc ablation resistance and anti-welding performance.
- Electrochemical Machining Electrodes: Used in electrolytic machining, they require electrodes with excellent electrical conductivity stability and corrosion resistance.
3. Classification by Morphological Type

- Bars and Plates: As basic forms, they can be processed into electrodes of various shapes and sizes according to needs.
- Custom-Shaped Electrodes: For complex application requirements, electrodes with specific shapes such as V-shaped and H-shaped can be customized.
II. Selection Guide for Copper-Tungsten Electrodes in Different Application Scenarios
1. Resistance Welding Field
- Application Scenarios: Copper-tungsten electrodes are mainly used in processes such as spot welding, seam welding, projection welding, butt welding, and flash welding. They are core materials for welding stainless steel and coated steel sheets in the automotive, electronics, and aviation industries.
- Selection Principles:
- Tungsten-Copper Ratio: Select an appropriate tungsten-copper ratio based on factors such as the welding material, welding current, and welding frequency. For welding high-thermal-conductivity materials such as stainless steel or coated steel sheets, it is recommended to use WCu75 – WCu85 electrodes. These electrodes have excellent high-temperature resistance and anti-adhesion performance, which can significantly extend the service life of the welding tips. For example, the WCu75 electrode combines the advantages of tungsten and copper, with high-temperature resistance, arc ablation resistance, high strength, high specific gravity, excellent electrical and thermal conductivity, and ease of machining. It is particularly suitable for making projection welding and butt welding electrodes with certain wear and high-temperature resistance requirements.
- Electrode Shape: Select an appropriate electrode shape according to the welding requirements. For welding parts with special shapes or limited space, such as battery tabs and motor windings, custom electrodes are required to adjust the tip angle, contact area, and length ratio to achieve better current distribution and pressure control.
- Precautions: Consider the heat dissipation performance of the electrodes to avoid electrode failure due to overheating.
- Advantages: Copper-tungsten electrodes exhibit excellent high-temperature resistance and anti-adhesion capabilities in resistance welding, which can effectively improve welding quality and efficiency and reduce production costs.
2. EDM Field
- Selection Principles: Select an appropriate tungsten-copper ratio based on factors such as machining accuracy, machining speed, and machining material.
- Recommended Models: For precision mold manufacturing and the forming of difficult-to-machine materials, it is recommended to use WCu70 – WCu80 electrodes. These electrodes have low wear, high precision, and good heat dissipation performance, ensuring stable electrode shape and low wear during the machining of complex molds.
- Precautions: Select an appropriate electrode hardness according to the hardness of the machining material to avoid low machining efficiency due to insufficient electrode hardness.
3. High-Voltage Electrical Appliance Contacts and Switches Field
- Application Scenarios: Copper-tungsten electrodes are key contact materials for high-voltage electrical appliances such as high-voltage vacuum switches, SF6 circuit breakers, lightning arresters, and load switches.
- Selection Principles:
- Tungsten-Copper Ratio: Select an appropriate tungsten-copper ratio based on factors such as the operating voltage, operating current, and breaking times of the contacts. For applications such as high-voltage vacuum switches and SF6 circuit breakers, it is recommended to use WCu80 – WCu90 electrodes. These electrodes have excellent arc ablation resistance and anti-welding performance, can reliably withstand large current breaking, and improve the high stability and safety of the power system. For example, tungsten-copper contacts containing 15% – 20% copper can be used in circuit breakers with voltages up to 500,000 volts or higher.
- Electrode Structure: Select an appropriate electrode structure according to the specific design requirements of the discharge tube. For high-voltage vacuum discharge tubes, electrodes with high ablation resistance, high toughness, and good electrical and thermal conductivity should be selected to ensure stable operation when the discharge tube heats up to thousands of degrees Celsius in a very short time.
- Precautions: Consider the machinability and thermal shock resistance of the contacts to ensure their stability and reliability during long-term high-load operation.
- Advantages: Copper-tungsten electrodes exhibit excellent arc ablation resistance and stability in high-voltage discharge tubes, effectively extending the service life of the discharge tubes and improving the reliability of the power system.
4. Electrochemical Machining Field
- Selection Principles: Select an appropriate tungsten-copper ratio based on factors such as machining accuracy, corrosion resistance, electrical conductivity, and electrode stability.
- Recommended Models: For the electrochemical machining field, it is recommended to use WCu85 – WCu90 electrodes. These electrodes have excellent electrical conductivity stability and corrosion resistance, can uniformly conduct the electrolytic current, achieve high-precision machining of complex cavities/microstructures, with low wear and excellent forming quality.
- Precautions: Consider the corrosion resistance of the electrodes to avoid a decrease in machining quality due to electrode corrosion.
