This article presents a detailed study on the mechanical properties of high-performance extruded molybdenum rods. The research focuses on the preparation methods, mechanical testing, and performance analysis of these rods, providing valuable insights into their behavior under various conditions.
Molybdenum, renowned for its high melting point, excellent corrosion resistance, and good mechanical properties, is widely used in high-temperature, high-pressure, and corrosion-resistant environments. Extruded molybdenum rods, in particular, are favored for their superior mechanical properties and dimensional stability. This study aims to investigate the mechanical properties of high-performance extruded molybdenum rods, exploring their preparation methods, testing procedures, and performance characteristics.
1. Preparation Methods
The preparation of high-performance extruded molybdenum rods typically involves a powder metallurgy sintering and forging process. This process includes the following steps:
- Powder Preparation: High-purity molybdenum powder is mixed with additives and water to form a homogeneous mixture.
- Sintering: The mixture is pressed into green compacts, which are then sintered at high temperatures (1700–1800℃) to form dense, high-strength blanks.
- Forging: The sintered blanks are heated and forged into rods using a multi-pass forging process. Intermediate annealing steps are employed to relieve internal stresses and improve ductility.
- Final Annealing: The forged rods are subjected to a final stress-relief annealing treatment to stabilize their microstructure and enhance their mechanical properties.
This preparation method ensures that the extruded molybdenum rods exhibit excellent mechanical properties, making them suitable for demanding applications.
2. Mechanical Testing
![]()
To evaluate the mechanical properties of the extruded molybdenum rods, a series of tests were conducted, including:
- Tensile Testing: Tests were performed at both room temperature (20℃) and elevated temperatures (1200℃) to assess the rods’ strength and ductility under different conditions.
- Hardness Testing: Vickers hardness measurements were taken to evaluate the rods’ surface hardness.
- Microstructural Analysis: Optical and electron microscopy were used to examine the rods’ microstructure and identify any defects or irregularities.
3. Experimental Results and Discussion
3.1 Tensile Properties
The tensile test results revealed a significant improvement in the mechanical properties of the extruded molybdenum rods at elevated temperatures. At 1200℃, the rods exhibited higher yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, and elongation compared to those tested at room temperature. For example, a rod extruded at 1300℃ exhibited a yield strength of 909 MPa and an elongation of 257% at 1200℃, demonstrating its excellent high-temperature performance.
3.2 Microstructural Analysis
The microstructural analysis revealed a uniform and fine-grained microstructure in the extruded molybdenum rods. This microstructure contributes to the rods’ superior mechanical properties, as fine grains enhance strength and ductility. Additionally, no significant defects or irregularities were observed in the microstructure, indicating the high quality of the preparation process.
3.3 Effect of Extrusion Parameters
The mechanical properties of the extruded molybdenum rods were found to be influenced by several extrusion parameters, including extrusion temperature, extrusion ratio, and alloy composition. Higher extrusion temperatures were found to improve the rods’ ductility and reduce their strength, while larger extrusion ratios resulted in finer grain structures and improved mechanical properties. Alloying elements, such as titanium and zirconium, were found to significantly enhance the rods’ strength and ductility by forming stable intermetallic compounds.
This study has demonstrated the excellent mechanical properties of high-performance extruded molybdenum rods, which are attributed to their unique preparation methods and microstructures. The rods exhibit superior strength and ductility at elevated temperatures, making them ideal for applications in high-temperature environments. The findings of this study provide valuable insights into the behavior of extruded molybdenum rods and offer guidance for their application in various industries. Further research can focus on optimizing the extrusion parameters and alloy compositions to further enhance the mechanical properties of these rods.
