Molybdenum Rod Properties and Applications
The vapor pressure of molybdenum rod is far above that in the range of typical vacuum furnaces. That’s one reason why molybdenum rod is typically used to make all-metal hot zones for vacuum furnaces in which temperatures range to 1500°C.
Molybdenum rod’s slow erosion rate and high creep resistance in molten glass are also highly desirable characteristics in certain industrial processes. There is virtually no negative effect on chemical or dimensional stability when the metal is used in electrodes immersed in variable glass chemistries.
Molybdenum rod is also the preferred choice in the manufacture of thermal conductors; welding electrodes; headpieces in the quartz industry; stirring bars for smelting; heavy hammers, fasteners, etc.
- High Density: 10.3 g/cm³
- High Melting Point: 2625°C (4760 °F)
- Low Vapor Pressure
- High Tensile Strength
- Low Coefficient of Thermal Expansion
- Low Electrical Resistivity
- Good Machinability
- High Absorption Capacity
- High Elastic Modulus
Applications
- Furnace pillars for sapphire crystal furnaces and other vacuum furnaces
- Furnace heater for sapphire crystal furnaces and other vacuum furnaces
- Tungsten headpieces for the industries of quartz
- Stirring bars for glass smelting and rear-earth smelting
- Tungsten heavy hammers
- Connecting rods
- Screws/bolts and other fasteners
- Furnace support pillars
- Electrodes for welding electrodes and rare earth metal industry

TZM Rod Properties
High temperature TZM molybdenum rod is the molybdenum-based alloy most commonly used in furnaces and heat treating structural components such as shielding and supporting parts, due to its high creep resistance. TZM molybdenum rod is also frequently used to make dies for isothermal forging, non-ferrous and ferrous metals casting, and molybdenum piercing plugs. In addition, TZM alloy rod is weldable and has a higher recrystallization temperature; properties essential in the making of molybdenum rocket nozzles.
- Creep Resistance
- High Tensile Strength
- Good Machinability
- High Recrystallization Temperature
- Corrosion Resistance
- Good Weldability

Lanthanated Molybdenum Rod Applications
The semiconductor and other rapidly developing, “high-temperature” industries use a large amount of lanthanated molybdenum rod products. Lanthanated moly rod has been used extensively to produce piercing heads in mills, due to its wear resistance, dimensional stability and strength under high stress.
