Detection Methods and Standards for the Density of copper-tungsten Alloys
Detection Methods
- Archimedes’ Principle (Water Displacement Method):
- Principle: Based on Archimedes’ principle, which states that the buoyant force acting on an object immersed in a fluid is equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by the object. By measuring the alloy’s weight in air and in water, its volume can be calculated, and subsequently, its density.
- Procedure: Measure the alloy’s weight in air, then completely immerse it in water to measure its weight in water. Calculate the density using the formula ρ = m/(V2 – V1), where m is the alloy’s weight in air, V2 is the total volume of the alloy and the container (determined by measuring the rise in water level), and V1 is the volume of the container alone.
- Application: Widely used for density measurements of various materials, including tungsten-copper alloys.
- Lift Method:
- Principle: Similar to the water displacement method but may involve more sophisticated measurement devices, measuring the lift force experienced by the alloy in a liquid to indirectly calculate its volume and density.
- Characteristics: This method may require specific equipment and higher measurement precision, thus suitable for high-precision requirements.
- Micrography Method:
- Principle: Involves observing the alloy’s microstructure under a microscope and estimating its density by measuring microscopic dimensions (such as grain size, porosity, etc.).
- Application: Primarily used for studying the relationship between the alloy’s microstructure and properties, rather than directly measuring density. However, it can provide useful information in cases where the influence of internal porosity on density is of interest.
- Digital Automatic Electronic Density Meter:
- Principle: Designed and manufactured by combining Archimedes’ volume displacement method with modern microelectronics technology. Automated measurement programs enable fast and accurate density measurements.
- Procedure: Place the alloy sample on the measurement platform, measure its weight in air and in water, and the instrument automatically calculates and displays the density value.
- Characteristics: Fast measurement speed, high accuracy, and easy operation, making it an essential tool for modern material density measurements.
The density detection standards for copper-tungsten alloys may vary depending on specific applications and alloy compositions. Generally, standards will specify the measurement method, measurement accuracy, sample preparation requirements, and data processing methods. For example, in some industrial applications, specific measurement methods and equipment may be required, and allowable deviation ranges for density may be stipulated.
For CuW90 copper-tungsten alloy (containing 90±2% tungsten and 10% copper), its density can reach up to 16.75g/cm³. In actual detection, relevant standards or technical requirements should be referred to, selecting suitable measurement methods and equipment to ensure the accuracy and reliability of measurement results. Additionally, attention should be paid to the standardization of sample preparation and the accuracy of the measurement process to ensure reliable measurement outcomes.
